Anyone know of a Comparison Table of Android Fall Detector Apps
    to link to ?

        -

            - Smart watch or small smart phone, Probably wrist
mounted, for elderly people liable to fall over, to
manually or automatically call (phone and / or SMS or
data or alert to Android app. of
friend/ co-house dweller ie spouse) &/or an alert
list of humans (and or remote subscribed health desk
and / or public national emergency number.

            - A device. with accelerometers, + inclinometers
(person fallen over = screen rotated device sensors)
GPS, WLAN, SIM to call report

            - Avoids needing to do expensive unsightly PIR
(burglar) detector house wiring, + no need to develop
software for { tracking feed from PIR detectors, +
software for phone interface, and specifying database
of expected movements and times, and interface for
            elderly user to re-program}.

            - would also work outside house in garden, and just
needs plug in WLAN extenders in power sockets, and
probably a WLAN aerial or 2 in in garden ?. Expensive,
            but only relatively so.

            - Also not cheap to purchase traditional fixed phone
line base stations + rental of radio panic buttons.
            (Typically 80-250 GBP purchase + 250 GBP/year @ (Currency exchange rates)) + With
GPS and SIM it will also work outside house and
generate co-ordinates to feed a map: "Fallen person is
            here"

            - 2015-08 Analysis
of Android Device-Based Solutions for Fall
            Detection "many smartphone-based fall detections
systems have been proposed by the research literature
during the last five years, while there is a decreasing
number of new prototypes that are implemented on
            special-purpose hardware." + "in many low-end Android
smartphones, the sensors are not fully operative while
the processor remains in a sleep mode, even if a
background sensing application is being executed. Thus,
the developers of a fall detecting system are obliged
to implement a "wake lock" to prevent the processor
from entering in a low consumption mode. However wake
locks provoke an important increase in the battery
drain" + "The advantages of using an Android smartwatch
(instead of a smartphone) to track the movements are
the ease and comfort of use, the high quality of
acquired sensor data, the minimum weight and the low
power consumption characteristics [160]. However, the
high and permanent mobility of the wrist is usually
distant from being a good indicator of the body
            stability."

two features: the accelerometer sampling frequency and
the way the mobile phone is carried. In this
experimental study, 5 participants have simulated
different falls and activities of daily living. Using
these data, the study shows that the sampling frequency
affects the performance of the detection. In the same
way, when a fall detector intended to be attached at
the body is carried in an external accessory, the
            performance of the system decreases."

I'm writing today to let you know
that Fitbit is now officially part of
Google. It's an incredibly exciting moment
for us as a company and for our Fitbit
                        community of users around the
                        globe.

                       Android Apps

                     Conclusions

                      - Ignoring their prime purpose (health/
exercise monitoring), one might want to keep
it just as a pedometer & to show who is
                      phoning your mobile.

                      - FitBit Charge 2 might be used to monitor
elderly: with an android phone nearby to
measure person's heart rate, presumably rate
goes high when they fall over, for a bit. The
3 accelerometers would be a clearer guide to
a fall, but whether fitbit app or a
competitor app might be used for an alert, I
                      haven't investigated.

                      - FitBit Charge 2 doesn't have a SIM card
or GPS or WLAN, so is reliant on Bluetooth to
                      adjacent smart phone.

                      - Tough if caught cycling in rain, more
                      than a splash.

cheaper devices, but not necessarily with
fall detectors, but maybe it might also
discover some extra manufacturers who sell
                      both.

Key Safe

All devices, if alerting from home, will also need
a Key Safe outside front door, to let rescue crew
in. Make sure key safe is as strong & as
secured to wall as front door of house.

    PS 2025-06 Other ideas:

      - Scatter Alexa's around, activate with "Hey Alexa,
      Help, I have fallen"

       Search with that
phrase & one gets various interesting hits.
      - Put a "Dead Man's Handle[s]" aka train drivers, en route
between living room, kitchen, bathroom, where the wobbly
person could push it each time they go past. Switch could be
eg of type electrical foot switch used for a sewing machine,
but not on floor, as they couldnt balance on one foot to push
it, instead on table top. It would connect to some device eg
a raspberry Pi ? to send an email to a special address,
Receiving end could have a watch dog timer, & if no
signal received within certains times, depeding on day or
night, generate an alert email or sms (via eg a gnokiii
      interface to a mobile).

      - My other idea of networked movement monitors )video cam
      or PIR, is detailed elsewhere.

Age UK still have no page for: Smart phone fall detector

         Try & fail with:

        www.ageuk.org.uk/search/?q=Smart+phone+fall+detector+app
         I suggest either:
         Point at my page berklix.org/~jhs/android/fall.html
Or Take info from my page & create your own page.
I have no commercial interest, I'm just an engineer with a
falling parent in UK & want best info &
alternatives not just for her but others globaly,
AgeUK listing just a single preferred service provider in
        UK is insufficient.
Any one system, even pendant + wrist + base station + dual
SIM to remote alert service, will fail occasionaly,
2 different systems bring more security, eg additional to
above alert service, a seperate android watch on other
        wrist.
(Analogy: Volvo over 40 years back offered dual circuit
        brakes, not single. )
