My scratch machine has a AHA-1540A.  It's only got one disk, but
perhaps i could reproduce the problem by hard-wiring the disk down to
sd1?

Maybe,
Now tomppa_ERASE@fidata.fi has used my testblock.c & 8f.c to prove he has the
same fault I see (mail on this next, youll be on cc line),
It would be worth you checking your card though.

However whether you'll detect it with just 1 disc I dont know.
Run several testblock -w simultaneously for best chance :-)
