Alt Manheim not shown on google maps, on the edge of Hambach (German page) , one of three open-cast lignite mines in the region -
Two including Hambach (English page on surface mine) , will be filled in with water to create lakes - will take 100 years, another, Garzweiler ( (English) (German)) , will potentially be filled in with soil (I don't believe that!) ready for new settlements to be built on top (daft idea). Would make a nice lake for sailing

  If you come out of a pub in the right area of Aachen late at night, one can stare at the bronze statue of mythical beast Bahkauv. see last colour pic base of de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahkauv
  ( Reminds me of the statue of a panther in Munich at the South West Corner of Rosenheimer & Anziger strasses. google.com/maps. In winter fog the panther looks eerie ! (P.S. There's still massive radio aerials on top of that building last I looked, I think it was an American military base after WW2, & still Police near the Panther, presumably with radio access, one can probably radio control whole of Bavaria from there, prob still of military significance, though people discuss Pullach. )
